Elements of the state police and riot police in Oaxaca dispersed with tear gas a group of feminist women attempting to reach the main square of the state capital. The women present denounced this action as a violation of their right to protest.
The contingent, composed of women of various ages, marched through the streets of Oaxaca demanding justice for those who are no longer here and requesting a state that protects them. However, since the previous Friday, the state government had placed metal barriers around the buildings of the main square, which the protesters regarded as an act of provocation.
During the mobilization, the women painted slogans demanding the legalization of abortion and greater security. Amid slogans like "In Oaxaca being a woman is to resist", they also criticized the lack of justice and protection from the state, pointing out that despite the alert for Gender Violence in 40 municipalities, in the first 100 days of the year there have been 14 femicides and 11 women remain missing.
During the march, voices were heard calling for "justice and the return alive of Sandra Domínguez", an activist missing for 5 months. Simultaneously, in Juchitán, young people took to the streets to denounce the daily violence they face, demanding justice and the release of young artist Diidxazá, who was detained last Tuesday on charges of carrying a firearm.
The organization Consorcio Oaxaca reported that during the so-called "Oaxacan Spring", 225 femicides have been committed and 855 women have been reported missing. According to the collective, these figures reflect the lack of justice and effective responses from authorities regarding gender violence in the region.
